DoubleTree by Hilton in Queenstown: A first-class hotel with a great view

Location

The DoubleTree by Hilton in Queenstown has an excellent Location right on Lake Wakatipu and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and lake. Somehow it is attached to the Hilton Resort and Spa Queenstown, which also includes a third building that is connected to the main building via a tunnel. In any case, you have to go to the Hilton Hotel for breakfast; There is no restaurant in the DoubleTree itself.

The city of Queenstown cannot be reached on foot. You can either use the passenger ferry, which runs to Queenstown and back several times a day, or you can take a taxi or your own rental car. The ferry costs NZD 14 per person each way in 2024, so it’s not really a bargain for a family. Nevertheless, this type of transport is practical because the boat docks directly below the hotel. The taxi is then much more expensive. So just going to Queenstown to shop or eat is rather difficult.

Equipment

At least the DoubleTree by Hilton in Queenstown has a two-level underground car park; There is also an open-air parking space. Both parking spaces are managed by an external company, to which the fees must also be paid. The first three hours of parking are free, after that you have to pay 16 NZD for 24 hours, which doesn’t exactly fall under the category of outrageous.

On the first floor there are two doors marked “Cinema”. However, we haven’t found any clue anywhere as to what this could be about.

Gastronomy

The DoubleTree by Hilton in Queenstown will not have its own restaurant, at least in 2024. Rather, the dining facilities of the neighboring Hilton Resort are essentially part of the offer. It should also be noted that the bar in the large hotel closes its doors at around ten in the evening. That’s not exactly a special recommendation for such a renowned hotel, especially because it’s so far outside of the city.

Room

The rooms at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Queenstown are spacious and comfortable. The rooms are equipped with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay, including a large bed, a flat-screen TV, a desk and a bathroom with a bathtub or shower. Most rooms have a balcony overlooking Lake Wakatipu.

We ourselves had a really nice and large room with an excellent bed and most of the desirable facilities. However, we had to walk almost a hundred meters to get from the elevator to the room. We were also unlucky that you can look directly at the bed through the floor-to-ceiling windows from the street. Strange feeling!

Unfortunately, as is now the case in almost all Hilton hotels, cosmetics are no longer available in small tubes, but only in large bottles that are attached to the wall. If one of them is empty, it will take more effort to have it refilled. too bad.

Nevertheless, we ultimately felt comfortable and really enjoyed the room.

Conclusion

Despite some flaws, the DoubleTree by Hilton in Queenstown is a first-class hotel that offers an unforgettable stay in New Zealand’s alpine city. The hotel offers an excellent location, very good facilities, a variety of restaurants in the neighboring building and comfortable rooms.

Personal experiences

The staff is friendly and helpful and the food in the “main house” is really very good. But you have to be aware that for most amenities you have to go to the Hilton Resort and Spa.

I can definitely recommend the DoubleTree by Hilton in Queenstown. It is the perfect place to spend an unforgettable holiday in Queenstown, provided you are prepared to travel long distances to Queenstown.
